Discover the Kharpocho Fort in Skardu, Pakistan

The Kharpocho Fort, located in Skardu city, is a magnificent and historically significant fortification in the Baltistan region. It sits on a small hill, surrounded on one side by the Indus River, Pakistan's longest river, and on the other by the city of Skardu. The fort is only a short 30-minute walk from Skardu's main market, Yadgar Chowk.

The construction of the Kharpocho Fort, also known as the "King of Forts" in Skardu, has been a topic of historical debate. According to Hishmatullah, the fort was built by Maqpoon Bugha, a famous ruler of Skardu, who lived from 1490 to 1515 AD and was the great grandfather of Ali Sher Khan Anchan. However, Mughal historians claim that Ali Sher Khan Anchan himself built the fort.

This viewpoint is supported by several European writers, including Cunningham, Foso Marine, and G.T. Vagne. The Imperial Gazetteer of British India also mentions the fort, stating that Ali Sher Khan, one of the most renowned Gralpos (Monarchs of Skardu) who ruled until the end of the 16th century, conquered Ladakh and built the fort in Skardu.

A popular legend surrounds the construction of the Kharpocho Fort in Skardu. It is said that the fort was built with an underground passage connecting it to the Raja's fort in the downtown area. The fort was designed for defensive purposes, as it is situated atop a small hill and is surrounded by the Indus River on one side and Skardu town on the other.

In case of attack from other states, the Raja could retreat to this fort, which was only accessible from the town side and protected from the other side by the Indus River. The entry was guarded by soldiers, and all communication was conducted through the underground passage. From the fort, one can also enjoy a panoramic view of the entire Skardu city.
